Refreshing your network connection under windows XP

This tutorial assumes the following things:

  1. You have some way of viewing this file; it is recommended that you print this out for easy reference.
  2. You are familiar with common windows tasks such a navigating folders and files, right clicking, etc.
  3. You have at least a rough idea what the cables in the back of your PC are for.

  1. Step 1
  2. Step 2
  3. Step 3
  4. Step 4
  5. Step 5

Step 1

Make sure your network cord/phone line is actually connecting your computer to your modem. If it is not, no amount of refreshing will help. If you don't know what a network cord or modem is, or, you don't know where they go, please ask a computer savvy friend or relative to help you.

Step 2

At your desktop, right click on My Computer and choose Open

Right Click on My Computer and choose Open

Step 3

On the left hand side of the My Computer folder is a link to My Network Places link, left click that to open the My Network Places folder.

Click on My Network Places

Step 4

On the left hand side of the My Network Places folder is a link to View Network Connections, click that.

Click on View Network Connections

Step 5

You should see one or more icons labled something like Local Area Connection. In my case, I have two computers on a local network, so I have two connections. Right click on the network connection you want to refresh and choose Repair. If your computer is connected to another computer on a network through that connection, it will refresh the connection with the network. If your computer is connected to the internet, it will refresh the connection with your internet provider. If you still can't connect to the internet or the network, and your SURE that your network cord is snugly plugged in, then your computer probably needs to be taken to a computer proffesional.

Right click on a connection and
		choose repair.
